Project Description

The short journal is about 30K words, The central idea of this book is talking about how Koreans, as an ethnic group which also share the same geographical land has been divided by three countries, China, South Korea and North Korea. But deep down their root, the Korean ethnic nationalism belief cannot be washed by any government and politics. Meanwhile, because of the ‘borders,’ their view of Nation, nationalism, their situation within global and identity have been formed very differently.
One week in DPRK, I documented the whole journey in this book. The conversation between two ‘tour guides’ Kim and Lim who are around my age is the clue of where I get the general view for how young north Korean think of their country and the relations with others. The conversation between us three same age girls is funny, lively and sometimes murky.
Another layer makes this conversation paradoxical is that the ‘tour guides’ who are actually sent by the government to keep foreigners under surveillance, they have been trained to avoid things that they are supposed to not mention to us, but they are also human with emotions, true feeling reveals over time.

Biography

I think of my artwork as a form of sociological study; interrogating the patterns of social relationships, social interaction and culture, especially across different nations. Often referencing the various nations, I have had the opportunity of interacting with, my work explores nationalism, identity, group ethics and the political effect on societies.
Working across photography, film, installation from sourced objects, I interrogate how these factors divide people into different nationalities and nations.
While I use a variety of materials and processes in each project, my methodology is consistent. The subject matter of each body of work determines the materials and the forms of work. My arrangements are schematic, inviting the viewer to move into a space of cross- examination and analysis.
